Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco caps break down into three series you’ll encounter in Huntington Beach: the standard galvanized multi-flue units (model prefix GC), stainless single-flue caps (SC series), and the heavier-gauge copper-finish line (CC series). The SC-8, SC-10, and SC-13 are the sizes we see most often on 1980s-2000s tract homes from the Yorktown area down to Huntington Harbour.

Identifying your match requires two measurements: the outside length and width of your flue tiles (not the chimney crown), and whether your flue projects above the crown or sits flush. Famco’s SC series uses an outside-mount leg system that needs at least 3/4 inch of exposed flue tile to grip. If your flue was cut flush with the crown during a previous repair, you’ll need the adapter skirt or a switch to a different mounting style. We carry both OEM Famco and the Gelco equivalent on our Huntington Beach trucks; the Gelco cross-reference fits the same flue dimensions but uses a slightly heavier mesh (.018 versus Famco’s .015), which we prefer on homes within two miles of the coast where salt air accelerates corrosion.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

• Rust streaks running down the chimney face. Famco’s galvanized caps carry a 20-year finish warranty, but that assumes inland air. In Huntington Beach, the marine layer deposits salt that breaches the zinc coating at the weld points first. We see this most often on homes west of Beach Boulevard where the caps hit the 8-10 year mark, not 20.
• Mesh sides detaching from the frame. The spot-welds between the mesh and the top lid fatigue from thermal cycling. Once one weld goes, the mesh flaps in wind and acts like a saw against the remaining joints. By the time you notice the noise, half the mesh is usually gone.
• Water in the firebox after rain. A cap that sits cockeyed because one leg has corroded through, or a lid that has warped from a chimney fire, directs water straight down the flue. In older Huntington Beach homes near the Newland Street Wetlands, we’ve found fireboxes with spalled brick from years of slow leaks the owner never traced to the cap.
• Animals or nesting debris. Missing or damaged mesh is an open invitation. The 5/8-inch mesh on Famco caps is spec’d to stop birds and squirrels; if it’s bent or rusted through, you’re running a wildlife hotel.
• The cap is gone entirely. Santa Ana winds in October and November will lift a cap whose legs have lost tension. Checking whether your cap is loose or missing is safe enough from the ground with binoculars. If you’re comfortable on a ladder and the roof pitch is gentle, you can verify the model stamp on the lid (usually visible from the side) and measure your flue tiles - that’s information that speeds our quote.

Actually swapping the cap is where DIY goes wrong. You’re working at height, often on a crown that’s already damp or crumbly, and the new cap needs level seating plus silicone-sealed leg points to keep water from wicking into the flue.
